How to win Sam Winchester’s heart in seven days
Day 6: show him your wings
It had been a total accident. Gabriel had stayed at Sam’s side while the hunter was sleeping, making sure he wouldn’t wake up when Dean stumbled into the living room of Bobby’s where Sam had occupied the sofa. He’d never stayed over night before, he’d never watched Sam sleep.
And when the hunter got up, rubbed his eyes and mumbled something, Gabriel was at the other side of the room, trying to keep his grace inside even though it was tingling and spreading, filling his vessel with almost too much heat to contain.
Sam walked past him two times and didn’t seem to notice him until he was fully awake and dressed, holding a cup of coffee with both hands. But instead of saying anything, his eyes widened and he almost dropped the cup.
“What… what are you doing?” he asked, more than a little surprised.
That was when Gabriel noticed his grace tingling in his shoulder blades and the soft flutter of wings as they pressed tightly against his back. He would never admit it, but a slight blush crept upon his face as he looked away. “Nothing”, he mumbled and tried to calm himself down enough to put his wings away.
“I thought they’d burn my eyes out”, Sam said as he put the coffee down on the table next to him and stepped closer.
“Don’t look at them”, Gabriel protested and took a step back.
“But they are amazing…” The hunter wanted to reach out to the wings and when Gabriel didn’t say anything, he brushed over one of the upper wings softly. “I thought they’d be white”, he admitted quietly.
“They are supposed to”, Gabriel answered but didn’t look Sam in the eye. “If you spend too much time on earth, they turn into a color that kind of represents you. They’re still made of grace, but it’s faint and hid behind the colors, so your eyes don’t get hurt.”
The way he kept the wings behind his back as much as possible showed that he was clearly uncomfortable with showing them, but kept them outside anyway. When he dared to look up and in Sam’s face, he saw nothing but fascination. That made him actually spread his wings, giving the hunter more room to strike through the feathers.
“Beautiful”, the hunter whispers and smiles.
